The MFC-J895DW is a versatile workhorse that can handle a variety of print tasks and provides good connectivity (including with iOS devices). As long as you stick to the XL cartridge at an affordable price, this is a good choice for light use at home or in a small office.
Brother’s MFC-J895DW is a versatile multifunctional printer that can handle a variety of printing tasks at home or in a small office. However, a relatively high cost of replacement ink cartridges means it is more suitable for mild use on an occasional basis than churning out many pages every day.
And, like some of the brothers ‘ smart home ‘ printers, the MFC-J895DW is only available through Amazon, currently for £138 or $99.99 in the US, so there is not much room to maneuver at a good price.
Here’s our review of Brother MFC-J895DW, evaluating its capabilities as a printer for MAC and iPhone owners. We test the print speed and quality to see if it’s the right choice for you. For more general purchase suggestions, see the best printer for MAC.
Design Features
Brothers are a little pricey for a home printer, but get that fixed with a variety of printing and connectivity features. It obviously has one eye on people working from home, because it includes a fax machine along with a 1200 x 6000dpi printer, and a 1200 x 2400dpi scanner and Copier.
The main paper tray at the base of the printer holds 150 sheets of A4 paper, and there is a second tray on the back that allows you to insert glossy photo paper. And, to speed up scanning and copying tasks, there is an automatic document feeder at the top of the printer as well.
The MFC-J895DW also supports duplex printing (two-sided), with options for ‘ long edge ‘ and ‘ short-edge ‘ bindings, which can be useful for printing smart-looking calendars, school reports, or occasional business presentations.
The inclusion of features such as document feeder means MFC-J895DW is a slight bulkier of some of its competitors, measuring 420mm wide, 341 deep, and 172mm tall, but you can still sit on a table or shelf without too much trouble. And there is no shortage of options when it comes to placing printers well, because it is very well connected and provides Wi-Fi and USB, as well as Ethernet for people-like me-who, have offices in the back bedroom where WiFi is a bit dodgy. It supports AirPrint too, so you can use it with Your iPhone or iPad too.
Our only real complaint here is that installing MAC software is a bit fiddly. The CDS provided with the printer can install software for Windows PCS, but Mac users must go to Brother’s website to find the MAC software. Then, for some reason, the installer program you downloaded only installs the software to print from the MAC, and if you want to use the scanner also then you are told to go and download the scanner app from the Mac App Store separately.
Fortunately, Mac software works well, and once we’ve downloaded and installed both apps, we have no problem setting up printers for use with our office iMac.
Print speed
Brother lists MFC-J895DW speeds at 12 pages per minute (ppm) for mono and 10ppm text for color. Our tests actually resulted in slightly lower speeds of about 10ppm for text documents and 8.5 ppm for business documents containing text and color graphics, but those speeds were still very adequate for light use at home or in a small office.
It’s pretty fast when it comes to glossy photo prints as well, generating a 4x6in postcard in just 25 seconds – which is actually faster than some of the more specialized photo printers we’ve reviewed.
Print Quality
The print quality is also good, with very crisp and smooth text, so the MFC-J895DW will not embarrass you if you need to produce high-quality documents for work or school reports. Our glossy photo prints are also very interesting – especially for the four basic color printers – with a good contrast that helps to highlight strong and bright colors.
So MFC-J895DW is better able to handle a variety of print tasks, from simple letters and school reports to glossy marketing brochures for small businesses.
Operational costs
It’s hard to fault performance and the MFC-J895DW feature but, as is often the case, the thing you need to look out for is the cost of replacing ink cartridges.
Brother Standard size cartridges cost £8.39 each for three colored inks-Cyan, Magenta and yellow-while black cartridges are quite a bit more expensive at £13.19. However, all four cartridges have the same ‘ Yield pages ‘ of 200 pages, which means that a simple text document of an expensive black ink cartridge works in a large and strong 6.5 p per page – well above average for a regular inkjet printer.
Color printing with standard-size cartridges is also relatively high at 12.5 p per page. At that price, we would not recommend using MFC-J895DW more than once a week, but Brother did not sell the larger XL cartridges that lasted for 400 pages, as well as multi-Pack with all four inks, which helped to lower the price a bit.
Bought by itself, three colors of XL cartridges for £12 each-£ 36 total-and last for 400 pages, which carries the cost of printing color to 9p which is more acceptable per page. But, again, black ink proved expensive with a black XL cartridge that stepped to £16.80 for page 400. That doesn’t bring the cost down to around the 4p per page, but it’s still above average for a simple black and white printing.
There is a multipack that contains all four standard cartridge sizes for £33.60, but that doesn’t save you a lot of good. Fortunately, XL’s multipack came to the rescue, with a Total price of £51.60 for all four sizes of XL cartridges, and which brought Mono text to around 3p per page, and color printing was around 9.5 p.
Verdict
There is no doubt that the MFC-J895DW is a versatile hardworking printer that can handle a variety of print tasks, and provides good connectivity to home or work networks, as well as Apple’s Mobile iOS devices.
